Obituary Listing
Obituaries act as quiet reminders of the finite nature of our lives. Yet, for those who have recently experienced the death of a family member or friend, an obituary means so much more. It is a bittersweet reminder of all we've lost, but it can also help us to remember all we enjoyed while they were alive. If you have recently lost someone you love, we hope that you will accept our condolences.
Our Facility
Now Known As "Rushnell Funeral Homes Inc."
Acquired by Rushnell Family Services in the winter of 2021 from the Osborne family, after the merger of the Whattam Funeral Home and the Hicks Funeral Homes, both in Picton.
The Whattam Funeral Home can trace its history back to approximately 1860 when the Gilbert family purchased the Cabinet Making and Undertaking business from James Gillespie Jr. The funeral home has been operated by several local families including: the Gillespie Family, the Gilbert Family, the Lighthall Family, the Whattam Family, the Piper Family and the Davis Family. The present location at 33 Main Street was opened in 1950 with major additions and renovations to better serve the growing business in Prince Edward County.
The Hicks Funeral Home can trace its history back to approximately the turn of the twentieth century and operated as Buchanan & Minaker, followed by George M. Hicks in 1921. George’s son, Winston joined the funeral business in 1932 and moved the funeral business to Centre Street in Picton in 1940. The Hicks family sold its interest in the funeral home to Russ Brown in the 1960’s until Bob & Gayle Osborne purchased the funeral home in 1988. The location at 2 Centre Street was closed with the merger in 2020 with the Whattam Funeral Home.
Whattam-Hicks Funeral Home building at 33 Main Street, Picton, has been updated, renovated and had major additions over the course of its seventy plus years as a funeral home, including the addition of a Chapel, Reception Facility and extensive landscaping with a water feature and colourful gardens, making the Whattam-Hicks Funeral Home one of the finest funeral facilities in rural Ontario serving all of Prince Edward County and areas.
