Obituary for Charlotte Hendry (Gray)

Charlotte Hendry (Gray)
Charlotte Hendry (nee Gray) - A long-time resident of Newcastle Ontario passed away at her retirement residence in Belleville on May 14th, 2018 in her 97th year. She was born in 1921 in Newcastle and lived there her entire life until moving to Belleville in the fall of 2014. Charlotte was the wife of the late Alex Hendry. She is survived by her three sons George (Pat) in Ottawa, Frank in Belleville, and Grant (Annette) in Miramichi, New Brunswick. She will be missed by them and by her 7 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Charlotte is survived by her sister June and was predeceased by siblings Ethel, Alecia, Gwen, Alfred, Mabel, Betty, Doug, Jack, Charles, and Ken. A lifelong member of the congregation at St. George’s Anglican Church in Newcastle, Charlotte and her sisters were key members of the ACW fundraising/catering business which flourished for many years – Charlotte finally had to give up her participation in her early 80’s – but her legacy lives on in a generation of grandchildren who insisted she teach them how to make her signature raspberry and blueberry pies, along with butter tarts and chocolate chip cookies. Charlotte’s wonderful sense of humour remained with her until the very end with a seemingly endless supply of humorous remarks and observations on life and her situation. The family would like to thank the staff at the Richmond Retirement Home for their care and many kindnesses during her time there, and Dr Rebecca Holmes who cared for her with such compassion and understanding. In respect of her wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial service. Internment will be a private family affair at St. Georges Cemetery Newcastle. For those wishing a donation in her memory, a charity of your choice would be appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to JOHN R. BUSH FUNERAL HOME., 80 Highland Avenue, Belleville (613-968-5588).
