Obituary for Allan Cyril Abraham Whitney

Whitney, Allan Cyril Abraham—It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Allan C. Whitney on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, in his 95th year. Cherished son of the late Cecil and Minnie Whitney. Predeceased by his beloved first and second wives, Madeline (Caine) and Earla (Fox). Allan had four devoted children; Cathy Kiser (late Robert), Mary Whitney, Allan Whitney Jr. (Roberta) and Darryl Whitney (Victoria). Predeceased by his step-son, Lee Wilcox. Allan held a cherished role of grandfather to his grandchildren; Aaron Kiser (Lisa), Neil Kiser (Lindsay), Sarah Anonichuk-Bedore, Melissa Gaskin (Ryan), Jason Whitney, Jeffery Whitney (Crystal), Benjamin Whitney and Olivia Whitney. He was also the proud great-grandfather to: Addyson Kiser, Skyla Gaskin, Owen Gaskin, Gage Whitney, Haisley Whitney, Kane Whitney, Emma Grundy and James Peacock. Survived by siblings, Margaret Brohm (Donald) and Charles Whitney (late Shirley). Predeceased by siblings; Barbara J. Wild (late Bud), John Whitney and Robert Whitney (late Jean).

Allan was born in Oshawa, the eldest of six children. His family settled in Lindsay where he spent his childhood, growing up in a small family home on Mill Street. When he was 14, during the Second World War, he was granted a special driving license to operate a large truck between Lindsay and Toronto to deliver fresh produce and other products to support his community. Al worked for the CNR from 1944-1959, starting in Lindsay and then moving to Belleville. In 1959, Al began his own business, Sidney Inn, on West Moira Street in Belleville. Together, with his family, he grew the business over many years to include fresh meats, dairy, produce and a thriving Garden Centre. He also founded Sidney Inn Carpet with his business partner as the property on West Moira grew. These ventures became an important part of the Belleville Business Community. Allan will always be ingrained in the hearts of his loved ones and will be remembered as a pilot in his community. A proud member of the Shrine Club, The Masonic and Elks Lodges, Al participated in events throughout the city and beyond: parades, conventions, bar tending at Lodge socials and many fundraisers. Al enjoyed socializing, often the, “life of the party”, while dancing, playing cards or horseshoes, bowling, throwing darts or spending time with friends at the hunting camp. In his later years, Al loved to work in his garden, often dropping off the many extra veggies he grew each year to his family, neighbors and friends.
