Obituary for Gladys June Ruhe Bonin (Poulsen)

BONIN, Gladys June Ruhe (nee Poulsen) – peacefully at Moira Place Long Term Care, Tweed on Friday, February 1, 2019 with family by her side. Born in Niagara Falls, Ontario June 24, 1937; to Neils and Sine Poulsen from Denmark. Loved mother of Marlene, Jason (Teri), Tyler and Ugette (Michael). Ever remembered grandmother of Tanor, Sawyer, Riley, Avril and Jack. Sister of the late Annelise, late Conrad (surviving Alice), Brook, Herbert, late Paul and the late David. Aunt and Great-aunt to many nieces and nephews. Graduated from Stamford Collegiate High School in 1955 and started teaching in Niagara Falls in 1958 after graduating from Hamilton Teacher’s College in Hamilton, Ontario. While working as a teacher, seamstress and raising a family, Gladys was constantly learning and upgrading; completing certifications in math, reading, and special education. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Queens University in (1993). Gladys retired as an elementary teacher after 36 years. Gladys was very dedicated to children and adults with special needs in the communities she lived in, constantly providing respite and advocacy. She was deeply dedicated to her family and always made the effort to return to Niagara Falls and Denmark to visit her siblings and their families. She loved the outdoors and playing games with her family and friends. Her home was a place for children and grandchildren to explore and create, with her door always open to anyone. She really enjoyed travelling, music, baking, camping, local theater and crafts. She never missed the opportunity to experience and support her children and grandchildren in their activities. A Memorial Service will be held at the Smithfield United Church, 872 Smith Street, Smithfield on Saturday, February 9th, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. Arrangements entrusted to the BRIGHTON FUNERAL HOME, 130 Main Street West, Brighton (613-475-2111). Gladys wishes that you give a donation-in-kind by making time to volunteer in your community, with mental health and special needs services.
